Hiroko Nagafuchi

Hiroko Nagafuchi is an artist specialising in sumi painting.

Born in 1951, Saitama Japan, Hiroko graduated with a BA from the Joshi University of Fine Arts and went on to be mentored on sumi painting by Prof. Hosen Goto. From 1974 to 1987, she taught sumi painting at the Tokyo Art School while simultaniously opening many solo exhibitions. From 1983 to 1992, she directed a sumie studio in Tokyo.

Moving to Australia, she began teaching traditional Japanese art at the Art Gallery of NSW from 1994, and from 2009, also began teaching at Macquarie University. In 2010, as the director of Sydney Sumie Society, she organised the exhibition: The Beauty of Nature at the Japan Foundation Gallery. She also began year-round exhibitions at the Kyushu restaurant in Sydney.
