Kay Watanabe

Kay  (Kayako)  Watanabe was born in Tokyo. After moving from Japan, she lived in the UK and US before moving to Australia in 2005. She was trained as a printmaker at the Ega Dohanga Kobo (Ega Etching Studio) in Tokyo, Central St Martins in London, Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai Art Centre and Hornsby TAFE. She is fluent in Japanese and English and formerly worked as a journalist. 

She uses various printmaking techniques, including etching, woodcut, linocut, collagraph, drypoint, monotype and  photopolymer etching, and often combine these techniques to obtain the desired effect in her work. 

She extensively exhibits her works and participates in various competitions within and outside of Australia. These include the CPM National Print Award, the “Beyond the Surface of the Page…” show at Marianne Newman Gallery in Sydney and the “Resilience” show at Rosebed St Gallery in Queensland for which her prints were selected. Kay has also been shortlisted for the Mini Print International Asia Pacific 2011. Her prints are available for sale at galleries and retailers in Sydney, Brisbane and Tokyo. 

Kay is a member of Impress Printmakers Studio, Brisbane, and the Print Council of Australia.
