Michael Hill
a.k.a. Doctor Comics
Visual Art  (NSW)

Michael Hill (a.k.a. Doctor Comics) has a Graduate Diploma in Media Studies (AFTRS), a Master's degree in animation (UTS) and a PhD in comics (Macquarie) which prompted his introduction on ABC Radio as “Doctor Comics”.

A member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Comic Art and The Comics Grid Journal of Comics Scholarship, and the Advisory Committee of the Q-Collection Comic Book Preservation Project he has lectured on Anime and Manga at the Art Gallery of NSW, Electrofringe, DiGiT Expo, the Japan Foundation and the Powerhouse Museum and has been interviewed many times in the media.

At the University of Technology, Sydney he won an Award for Innovative Teaching and held Course Director positions in Animation, Interdisciplinary Studies, Postgraduate Design and Visual Communication. Previously, he was Lecturer in Film and Video at Sydney College of the Arts where he made some AFI award nominated experimental films and developed the use of Japanese style woodblock printmaking in animation and graphics projects. His considerable experience of Art and Design education ranges from technology and management to research and he has worked as a consultant to several institutions including the NSW HSC curriculum study of Anime in Japanese Language and Culture subjects.

Having donated his research collection, the Michael Hill Collection of Australian Comics, to the National Library of Australia he is now concentrating on creative projects including his own graphic novel Blotting Paper: The Recollected Graphical Impressions Of Doctor Comics. As an artist has exhibited at the Silicon Pulp Animation Gallery, DAB LAB Research Gallery, the Bunker Cartoon Gallery and in the 2010 and 2011 Bald Archy Prize, and has continued to apply Japanese printmaking techniques as a method of image-making in his work both in print and on screen. In September 2013 he will exhibit works on paper at Gauge Gallery in Glebe and launch the second issue of his artist book/comic Blotting Paper.
