Noriko Shimada
Contemporary | Music | Performance | Other - classic music   (NSW)

Born in 1960 in Tokyo. Noriko’s father, Hideyasu Shimada was principal viola player in the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Arts, she went to Hanover (Germany) to study with the worldrenowned bassoon soloist, Klaus Thunemann at Hochschule fuer Musik und Theater and completed her Konzertexam (Soloist’s Diploma).

Soon after Noriko was awarded the position of Principal Bassoon with the Brabant Orchestra in the Netherlands. Two years later she joined Ensemble Modern Frankfurt in Germany, working with numerous contemporary composers and conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Heinz Holliger, Karlheinz Stockhausen G. Kurtag, Peter Eötvös, John Adams, Gunther Schuller, Frank Zappa, George Benjamin, G. Ligeti and Mauricio Kagel.

Noriko has made countless recordings with the Ensemble Modern both on bassoon and contrabassoon. She recorded Berio's Sequenza for solo bassoon for Mode. (THE COMLETE SEQUENZAS, ALTERNATE SEQUENZAS & WORKS FOR SOLO INSTRUMENTS). A quote from Paris Transatlantic Magazine (10/2006): “Sequenza XII for bassoon (another wonderful reading by Noriko Shimada) is, on a purely emotional level, one of the most exquisite listenings on offer here, its fantastic slow glissandi an impressive example of the virtuoso circular breathing needed to play this score.”

Besides playing contemporary music, Noriko has worked regularly with many mainstream orchestras and ensembles, notably the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Wurtemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. As contrabassoonist with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe she has appeared on several recordings including; Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Missa Soleminis and Fidelio with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony Op. 9 with Claudio Abbado and the Complete Wind Music by Richard Straus conducted by Heinz Holliger.

Since 2002 she has been principal contrabassoon with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
