Shigeru Komatsu

Music/Sound   (WA)

Shigeru Komatsu was born in Shiga, Japan, and started learning the cello at 16, studying with Toshio Kuronuma and Noboru Kamimura at the Kyoto City University of Arts, graduating in 1983. Shigeru was a member of the Kobe Chamber Orchestra before moving to Sydney and joining the ABC Sinfonia. During his time in Sydney he studied with Algimantas Motiekaitis (then principal cellist of Sydney Symphony Orchestra). Shigeru has been a member of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra since 1987.

Shigeru is a founding member of the cello quartet, I Cellisti, which is one of the few regular cello quartets in the world. Formed in mid-1994, by four cellists from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO), their debut performance was for a benefit concert for the victims of the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Since then the quartet has performed throughout Perth and country Western Australia. Following on from the success of their first national tour in 2003, I Cellisti was invited to perform at the World Expo Japan 2005.

I Cellisti travelled to Japan again in December 2006, performing in concert halls, schools and hospitals in Hokkaido and Kyushu. They also performed a specially written piece for cello quartet and clarinet at the Music Department of Otani University, Hokkaido. I Cellisti returned to Japan in January 2009, performing in Kyushu, Otsu and Hokkaido.
