Yuria Okamura

Yuria Okamura is a Melbourne-based artist currently undertaking Master of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts (the University of Melbourne). She has previously completed Bachelor of Fine Arts - Painting (Honours) in 2010 at RMIT University, Melbourne. She has been given a number of awards and scholarships, including RMIT Siemens Fine Art Scholarship, RMIT honours travelling endowment scholarship, Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award, and Facetnate Visual Art Grant, as well as being selected as a finalist for art awards such as Hazelhurst Works on Paper Award and Calleen Art Award.

Yuria’s works are predominantly painting/drawing on paper, and some installations. She has always been fascinated by cosmology: knowledge and beliefs regarding the natural world and the universe, and interpretations of our existence in relation to the cosmos. Her research interests ranges from mystical, religious, philosophical to scientific cosmologies. Her work therefore draws upon animist totems, scientific illustrations and diagrams, geometric abstraction, and religious architecture and decoration.

Yuria’s artwork was recently features in the 12th issue of Fukt : a magazine for contemporary drawing based in Berlin. She has been showing her work in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including Five Walls Projects (Melbourne), Kunstraum Tapir (Berlin, Germany), Broadway Gallery (NYC, USA), John Buckley Gallery (Melbourne), Langford 120 (Melbourne), Seventh Gallery (Melbourne), Japan Foundation Gallery (Sydney), and Mølla På Grim (Kristiansand, Norway).
